Weekly shopping totals for week ending 10/15: Saved 76%!

Posted October 16, 2013

Time to calculate those savings!

Here are my weekly grocery and drug store shopping totals for the week ending 10/15. They include how much I would have spent without sales and coupons, how much I saved and how much I actually spent. How did you do this week?

Subtotal before sales and coupons: $360.90

Total saved: $276.22

Total paid: $84.68

% Saved: 76%!

My weekly budget is $80/week and I spent $84.68 so a little over budget for the week. I am still within the monthly budget, though, because I spent so little 2 weeks ago.

Hey - tell me again why I have to stay within a budget to make ends meet but the entire government is somehow exempt from the same level of basic financial responsibility when they spend my money? Oh, sorry - that rant is probably better suited for another blog. :-)

Thankfully, no interventions were required for my husband and daughter this week as they had no unaccompanied grocery store outings.

Last week I shopped at Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, CVS, and Food lion.

How did you do last week?

To figure out the percentage you saved:

Take the total amount saved divided by the total cost of the products before sales and coupons.

How did you do this week?

I just moved to Durham and the first thing I did was look for an Italian market! LOL

  • jdouglas13 Oct 17, 2013

Thanks watchhillgirl! I used to buy San Marzano tomatoes there sometimes when we lived in Apex. Great price if you buy by the case, but open to check for dents (there were often many). Lots of yummy stuff there! It has been so long I almost forgot about them.

The italian market is in Morrisville- Capri Flavors! They do a big mail order business, but have a little store. They also have cooking lessons!
I was like a kid in a candy many wonderful cheeses and cured meats. The prices are not bad either. I managed to get out under $30.00 5 bags of cookies, some sharp provelone, sopprassa, olive oil, bread, basil, oregano (herbs were only $1.00). You need to check it out. It is going to be a regular stop for me now, especially with the holidays

We are loving having the new HT so close. Saving $$$ on gas that I would much rather use on groceries or something worthwhile.

Watchhillgirl please share the info on the Italian market!!

Thanks for sharing watchhillgirl and jdoulgas! Great job to both of you! The Italian market sounds like a place that my budget would burst at! lol

That is quite a haul, jdouglas. I know you are really enjoying that new HT down the street from you!

Not as good as everyone else, but I did go to an Italian market and spent too much, but I got some cookies there, that were normally $3.99 a bag for $1.00 that we just had to have! So that justified spending more on cheese and Sopprassa! :-)
Total spent this week $62.56 but saved 57%. Not great, but still not bad!

Great job Faye and jlnedwicke! I hear you about the gov't shutdown. We've been really worried about Social Security payments. Hopefully they will get it together. Thankfully our freezer and pantry are full in case they don't.

Last week was a big and pricey stockup week for us. I bought most of the soups and broths we will be using until next year at this time, a lot of cleaning and household items that you can't eat but at good prices, and a bunch of miscellaneous food necessities. Total retail $431.98, OOP $169.39, savings $262.59 or 61%.

Wow, jlnedwicke! Those are really great savings! Where did you shop?

  • jlnedwicke Oct 16, 2013

This week I did an 89% saving pretty good for me! I did a lot of different stores and got things from Toys to stock up for the holidays to Halloween candy, medicine for the colder season ahead and some heath and beauty needs!
