RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures plummeted into the mid-20s across much of central and eastern North Carolina early Thursday, but warmer weather is on the way for the weekend, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

The low temperatures at Raleigh-Durham International Airport dipped to 25 degrees at 6 a.m., the coldest day at the airport since March 22.

Afternoon highs will reach the mid-50s Thursday under sunny skies, and temperatures will continue to warm into the mid-60s and even low 70s during the weekend.

Nighttime temperatures will also moderate. Friday morning will be chilly, with lows dipping to near freezing, but overnight lows during the weekend will be in the 50s.

"We see a lot of wild swings in temperature during this time of year, and the next few days will be a great example of that," Gardner said. "We'll climb into the mid-70s on Sunday afternoon, and then be back in the mid-50s by the middle of next week."

On Friday, parts of the Triangle could see light rain and sprinkles during the afternoon and evening. Clouds will stay put during the weekend, but rainfall will be sparse until Monday, when another cold front should move through the state.
