Weekend starts sunny, cold; flurries possible early Sunday

"We're seeing that colder air pouring into the region behind Friday night's cold front," WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said. "We'll have sunshine and blue skies all day Saturday, but it will be chilly."

Winds from the west-northwest could pick up during the afternoon, gusting up to 15 mph.

A second system, one that will race through the Triangle during the early-morning hours on Sunday, could help produce scattered flurries in parts of the area, although the chances for any noticeable snow are slim.  

"This system is diving to the south and west, and it will slide eastward during the next 24 hours. But it's going to weaken and lose some of its moisture," Moss said. "We could end up with a band of flurries or snow showers around daybreak on Sunday. Most of the area probably won't end up with a dusting."

Chances for flurries will top out at about 25 percent from 4 to 8 a.m., and the system will be gone by mid-morning, allowing sunshine to return by Sunday afternoon. Highs on Sunday will climb to near 50 degrees after starting in the upper 20s. 

"We can't rule out a few flakes," WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson said, "But this won't be a high-impact event. Churches won't need to cancel services."

Highs Monday will reach the upper 50s, but the warm air will quickly disappear on Tuesday thanks to another system. Highs on Wednesday could remain below freezing after starting near 20 degrees.
