Weekend starts cold but warm air on its way

RALEIGH, N.C. — Despite a frigid start on Saturday morning, temperatures around the Triangle won't stay down for too long.

A cold front that moved through the area Friday brought some showers and left chilly air in its wake. But high pressure moving in Saturday will make for a sunny day and lead into much warmer temperatures during the week.

"It looks like we'll see some additional warming as we start the week on Monday, with highs probably climbing into the low 60s," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss. "Then on Tuesday, we warm even more than that. Some of us may make it to 70 (degrees) or better."

Saturday morning brought a sharp drop in temperatures from 24 hours earlier. Towns around Raleigh saw anywhere from a 9- to 18-degree difference in morning lows.

Runners at the Krispy Kreme Challenge toed the line with the mercury registering around 30 degrees, Moss said. As the race festivities wraps up around 11, the air will warm to around 38 degrees.

Sunday will start cold again, but it will eventually warm up to the mid-50s.
