Here’s your weekend family fun! As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar for more weekend activities.
Historic Stagville, along with Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, will host Stagville Under the Stars from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday, at the historic site in Durham. The free event focuses on the astronomy and night sky myths and legends told in African cultures along with the related stories told by scientists today. The evening includes storytelling, tours and telescopes from the planetarium. Activities can be found at the site’s Visitor’s Center, at the main site of the Bennehan-Cameron House.
Bennett Place Historic Site, also in Durham, will mark the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with some special activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. There will be special guided tours, information from a historian and more. It’s free.
Saturday is FAFSA Day, a day set aside for families to get free help with filling out financial aid forms for college. For all the details and how to take part in the day, check our earlier post from Christine Hall of CMH College Consulting
The State Capitol in Raleigh will mark the February birthdays of George Washington and an Italian sculptor who paid tribute to the first president. On Friday and Saturday, the Capitol will open an exhibit to honor the 100th birthday of Romano Vio, the artist who recreated the Washington statue that sits in the Capitol Rotunda. There will be an official unveiling of the exhibit at 9 a.m., Friday. But, for families, the event to consider is a special program called “Sculpture Alive!,” from noon to 1:30 p.m. Kids ages 4 and up can learn about the statue, make their own to take home and dress up like the statue for a photo. The event includes cake and a round of “Happy Birthday.” Registration is required. The fee is $5. To register, call or email Capitol Education Coordinator Terra Schramm, 919-715-3962 or terra.schramm@ncdcr.gov.
We have two consignment sales in Cary this weekend - The 2nd Look Boutique and First United Methodist Church of Cary. Check my earlier post for details.
The ArtsCenter in Carrboro’s SuperFun Series for families continues with a performance of “Rumpelstiltskin” by Rags to Riches Theatre for Young Audiences. The hour-long show is 11 a.m., Saturday. Tickets are between $7 and $9. The show is best for preschoolers to early grade schoolers.
Discover the Dinosaurs makes a stop at the N.C. State Fairgrounds this Friday through Sunday. The traveling show features 8 to 10 prehistoric scenes, plus a variety of other activities. Tickets are between $12 and $20, plus extra costs for some of the activities. Read my earlier post for details, including a link to the event. It looks like they have changed some of the pricing since I wrote about it.
The Garner Storytelling Festival is Saturday at North Garner Middle School, 720 Powell Dr. The free event includes workshops for educators and an afternoon festival with student performances.
The Relative Pitch, featuring open mic performances from kids 18 and under, will be 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, at the Broad Street Cafe in Durham. Read my earlier post for details about this great program.
