Weekend Plans Memorial Day Edition: What's open, closed, happening

Don't forget that there are still strawberries out there to pick and that public pools are opening for the season! It's a big weekend for pool openings. As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar for more.

The second Someone Special Like Me 5K and Family Fun Day is Saturday and WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. Registration starts at 7 a.m. A kids dash is at 8 a.m. The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. The morning also includes a variety of other fun activities, including mascots, face painting, a fire truck, vendors, food and more information about Someone Special Like Me, an indoor play area for kids with special needs. The Triangle Wind Ensemble will perform favorites by John Williams at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary Sunday. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and free for kids 12 and under. Reserved table seats are $25. Lawn chairs, picnics, blankets are all allowed.

Marble Kids Museum in Raleigh will have some special Memorial Day activities Monday, including a dance party, fireworks painting, rocket science and other summer fun. It’s free with admission, which is $5 per person.

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham offers a week of activities all about wheels. It runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 3 p.m., Sunday. The special activities include a tractor wheel maze, lots of trucks and a paper roller coaster. It’s all free with admission to the museum which is $14 for adults and $10 for kids ages 3 to 12.

Historic Yates Mill County Park will hold its regular mill tours this weekend. Half-hour tours are 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, and an hour-long heritage tour is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday (those are best for ages 7 and up). A special heritage mill tour also is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday.

Dinosaurs! We have the Dinosaurs exhibit at the N.C. Zoo. It features a collection of animatronic dinosaurs and has been a huge hit. Another bit of news from the zoo: One of its polar bears has returned.

And the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences’ Dinosaurs in Motion is open. This is a stunning exhibit that features 14 life-sized metal sculptures of dinosaurs. Read my full review for more about this exhibit, including some cautions if you have young kids or children who are sensitive to sound or light. This is a dark and loud exhibit. And we have baseball! The Durham Bulls are out of town until Monday when they have a game at 5:05 p.m. The Carolina Mudcats in Zebulon are home all weekend. Games are at 7:15 p.m., Friday; 6:15 p.m., Saturday; 2 p.m., Sunday; and 4 p.m., Monday. There will be fireworks Friday night and kids run the bases on Sunday.

Raleigh’s Sunday in the Park concert series begins Sunday with a free concert featuring the classic rock of Last Call at Pullen Park, 520 Ashe Ave. It all starts at 6 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket for seating. The concert series this year will switch between Pullen and Fletcher parks in Raleigh.

Bennett Place state historic site in Durham will remember American soldiers of all time periods with special events and military living historians from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday.

Fayetteville has all kinds of activities to honor the men and women who have served our country as part of its 31 Day Salute, a month-long series of activities. This weekend, it includes a living history program at the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum.

Summerfield North in north Raleigh will hold its 20th annual Memorial Day parade at 10:30 a.m., Monday. The neighborhood sits between Six Forks Road and Falls of Neuse Road, and between Strickland Road and Newton Road. The event involves more than 500 families participating or observing and features local businesses, local politicians, neighbors, mascots and more. I'll have a bit more about this on Friday.

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences is open all weekend. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and Saturdays; and noon to 5 p.m., Sundays.

The N.C. Museum of History is closed Monday, but open every other day. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and Saturdays; and noon to 5 p.m., Sundays.

The N.C. Museum of Art is closed Monday, but open every other day. Free family tours for ages 5 to 11 are 10:30 a.m., Saturday and Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday and weekends, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday.

Marbles Kids Museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily, including Monday when it is usually closed.

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham is open daily, including Monday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m., Sunday.

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill has planetarium shows scheduled Saturday and Sunday.

Kidzu Children’s Museum in Chapel Hill will run its usual hours - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. Admission is free on Sunday. It’s closed, as usual, on Monday.

The N.C. Zoo in Asheboro, about 90 minutes from the Triangle, is open all weekend.

The rides at Pullen Park in Raleigh are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily, in Raleigh, including Monday. And don't forget about the carousel at Chavis Park too.

The Stay & Play Snack Cafe in Durham will be open during its usual hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
