Weekend Plans Memorial Day Edition: More 'Frozen,' other fun

“Frozen,” will be on the big screen at 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, as part of Lumina Theatre’s outdoor movie series at Southern Village in Chapel Hill. The movie launches the theater’s summer movie schedule. Tickets are $4. If these are anything like the viewing of “Frozen” at Koka Booth in Cary last weekend, it’s going to be huge!

Speaking of Koka Booth Amphitheatre, the N.C. Symphony’s Summerfest season opens with Beethoven’s 5th. Advance tickets start at $30. Kids 12 and under are free. The concert starts at 7:30 p..m., Saturday. Picnics are welcome. In fact, they’ll have a contest for the best picnic. The winner will take home a $100 gift card from Whole Foods.

Build It! Bamboo continues at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham through Monday. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, the museum offers a chance for visitors to create with one of the world’s most versatile plants - bamboo. Bamboo artist Will Hooker, who has created other pieces around the Triangle, also will be at work. It’s free with admission, which is $10 for kids ages 3 to 12 and $14 for adults.

Bennett Place, a state historic site in Durham, will host a Memorial Day Remembrance from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. Military living historians representing the American soldier from all time periods throughout our nation’s history will commemorate the sacrifices of our servicemen and women. The program is free.

Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh will celebrate Memorial Day all weekend with special activities like Fizzy Fireworks Painting and a Rocket Science Lab from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Monday. It’s free with admission, which is $5 per person.

The Rex Hospital Open, which is free for kids 16 and under, runs Thursday through Sunday at TPC at Wakefield Plantation in north Raleigh. A general four-day pass is $10. Saturday is Family Day with free face painting, bounce houses, a Hurricanes slapshot booth, mini-golf, a rock climbing wall, snow cones and more. Sunday is Service Appreciation Day. Free admission is offered for active and former military, police, fire and EMS. Military and emergency vehicles will be on display. Oh, and there's golf too!

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh is home to Rainforest Adventure, a special exhibit that takes visitors on a “maze” through the rainforest. You have to answer a series of questions to move through the exhibit. In the middle, you’ll find monkey bars, a short zip line and more. This is a lot of fun for kids 3 to 12 and their adults. Tickets to the exhibit are $7 for adults and $5 for kids 3 to 12.

The Durham Bulls are away, but the Carolina Mudcats in Zebulon have home games Friday through Monday (and Tuesday). The Monday game is scheduled for the very family-friendly time of noon. And fireworks are planned after both the Friday and Sunday night games.

The Cary Commons and Triangle Town Center Barnes & Noble stores will host a summer reading kick-off. It’s 6 p.m., Friday, at the Triangle Town Center location, and 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Cary location on Maynard Road. Check Barnes & Noble’s website for details. The store’s reading program is for kids in first to sixth grades. If they read eight books over the summer, they earn a free book.

The third annual Someone Special Like Me 5K is starts 8 a.m., Sunday, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. The event includes a 5K run/walk and kids dash, plus activities and giveaways for families. The event raises money to build a recreation center for kids with special needs in the area.

Ackland Art Museum has a free family day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. Visitors can design their own pop-up books and create a collaborative picture-story based on a work of art. Listen to stories at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. that inspired works in the galleries. Activities are designed for kids ages 4 to 12. Ackland also has a free spoken word workshop for middle school and high school students from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. Pre-registration is required for the workshop.
