Weekend Plans: Lion King, Globetrotters, 3D documentaries, more

Happy weekend! Here’s what’s going on in the family fun department. As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar for more ideas.

We have a couple of big shows this weekend. Disney’s The Lion King is at the Durham Performing Arts Center almost daily through March 20. Tickets are getting harder to come by. I saw this show last weekend - spectacular! Also, the Harlem Globetrotters are at PNC Arena for one show at 3 p.m., Saturday. These are a lot of fun! Tickets start at $21 for the Harlem Globetrotters and $35 for The Lion King.

At the natural sciences museum in downtown Raleigh is “Antarctica 3D: On the Edge.” The 20-minute film will join the museum’s regular lineup of 3D movies on Saturday. A premiere, which includes discussion about the movie and a 40-minute version of the film, starts at 6:30 p.m., Thursday. The movie showcases the creatures and marine life that make the frigid region their home. Tickets are $5 and free for museum members for Thursday’s event. Tickets to the movie once it opens are between $2 and $5.

At Marbles Kids Museum’s IMAX theater, “National Parks Adventure 3D” opens with multiple showtimes on Saturday. I had the chance to see this film last weekend. It is breathtakingly beautiful. Highly recommend. Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for kids.

Also at Marbles this weekend is the Future Me Kids Fair from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. Kids can learn more about all of the careers available to them and meet some local professionals. It’s free with admission, which is $5 per person.

Kidzu Children’s Museum will host a free Teddy Bear Clinic inside University Place as part of Rare Disease Day from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday. Children are encouraged to bring their teddy bear, favorite doll or stuffed animal to become a “patient” for area doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals to give a “physical exam.” The event aims to help young children feel less afraid about medical procedures, equipment, and the professionals in uniform. Other activities are planned. It’s free.

Barnes & Noble stores will be hosting Dr. Seuss storytimes this Friday and Saturday to celebrate the famed author’s birthday. Check Barnes & Noble's website to see if a storytime is planned near you.

The Durham Regional Theatre, comprised primarily of kids from across the Triangle, will present “Alice! A Mad Musical Fantasy” at 1 p.m., Saturday, at E.K. Powe Elementary School, 913 Ninth St., Durham. Tickets are $10 for kids and $15 for adults. It’s designed for all ages.

Cary’s youth theater program will present the Judy Blume classic “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” with shows Friday through Sunday at the Cary Arts Center. The story follows Peter Hatcher as he tries to deal with his little brother, Fudge. Advance tickets are $5 to $10.
