The Museum of Life and Science will celebrate 70 years in August
Happy weekend! Here’s what’s happening on the family fun front. As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar and our #100thingsWRAL list of summer fun.
The Museum of Life and Science in Durham is celebrating its 70th birthday with Science at Sunset: A 70th Birthday Celebration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday. Tickets are $7 per person and are available only on the day of the event. There will be food trucks, live music, crafts and outdoor play.
Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s 17th annual summer show continues at the Forest Theatre in Chapel Hill. This massive production, featuring puppets of all sizes, performers and live music, will run there through Labor Day and then move to the N.C. Museum of Art.
Expedition: Raleigh!, a city-wide scavenger hunt in downtown Raleigh is Saturday. Teams will move through the city as they compete in a series on challenges. All ages are welcome. Expedition: Raleigh Junior is designed for families with kids ages 9 and under. It’s not free, but money goes to help a great cause. Tickets are $50 per person or $200 for a team of five. The event supports the Empty Frames Initiative, which helps teens who have aged out of the foster care system.
The Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts in Raleigh will present Tarocco: A Soldier’s Tale at 7:30 p.m., Saturday. The show is a fusion of circus arts, dance, mask-and-puppet theater, original music, elaborate costumes stunning animation, according to a description. It tells the story of Italian WWI infantryman, trapped behind enemy lines. Tickets start at $28.
Raleigh Gluten & Allergen Free Wellness Event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, at the Kerr Scott Building on the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. The event includes cooking demonstrations, speakers, food samples and more. Tickets are $10. Kids under 13 are free.
The Little Gym of Durham is hosting an Opening Ceremony Celebration for future Olympians (#Trainingfor2028) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 12. 
The Carolina Mudcats has home games Friday through Sunday. On Friday, the team will mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and end the evening with fireworks. Saturday is Superhero Night. The first 1,200 kids ages 14 and under will get a superhero cape to take home.
The Durham Bulls also are home through Sunday with fireworks after the Friday and Saturday games.
And the Carolina RailHawks have a game Saturday against Puerto Rico FC.
