It’s a busy weekend full of outdoor activities. More public pools are opening. The strawberry crop is winding down, but farms are open. Outdoor movies also are being screened. As always, check WRAL.com’s Out & About calendar for more weekend activities.

Here's your weekend family fun!

Speaking of summer movies, the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh will feature a big family hit - “Frozen,” the sing-along version. The movie starts at 9 p.m., Saturday. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and free for kids 6 and under. Get ready to belt out “Let It Go!” Lawn chairs, blankets and picnics are welcome.
Sesame Street Live “Make a New Friend,” hits the PNC Arena this Friday through Sunday with multiple shows. Elmo, Grover and their Sesame Street pals welcome Chamki, Grover's friend from India, in this celebration of friendship and cross-cultural similarities, including singing, dancing, and sharing cookies. These are a lot of fun for toddlers to young grade schoolers. Be sure to check out our ticket deal, which is good through June 4.
It’s First Friday in downtown Raleigh and among the special activities planned, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will stay open until 9 p.m. with a free movie and other attractions. At 7 p.m., the museum will show “At the Earth’s Core,” a 1976 sci fi movie. “Dig It! The Secrets of Soil” also is open with last entry at 7 p.m. Support from BASF, the Soil Science Society of America, and other donors means there is free entry to this exhibition, which runs through Aug. 16.
Mezza Luna Lavender Farm in Apex is open for the lavender season. The family-owned farm sells various lavender items, including sachets, essential oil and cookies. Kids can draw at an activity table and get their nails painted. The farm, which had planned to stay open through next week, will close this Sunday for the season because of a very busy opening weekend.
Beaver Bog’s Ice Cream at Northgate Mall in Durham will celebrate its grand opening at 3 p.m., Saturday. Storyteller "Farmer Ronnie" will tell the Beaver Bog story with sing-along songs and music. There also will be some free samples. The pop-up shop is open at the mall through Aug. 31.
The N.C. Zoo will celebrate World Oceans Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. Children can create bottle cap art, make igloos with milk jugs, learn the Japanese art of fish printing and participate in a host of other activities that emphasize protecting the oceans for future generations. The zoo also will host the Run Wild 5K on Saturday.
Triangle Volksmarch, a self-paced walking challenge for all ages, will be held at various locations along the Reedy Creek section of the Capital Area Greenway between the North Carolina Museum of Art and William B. Umstead State Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday.
I’ll have more about this on Friday and next week, but Marbles Kids Museum’s grocery store and kitchen in its Around Town exhibit is getting a new look. The updated space will be officially unveiled with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., Saturday. Special activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This has been a favorite of my kids, starting from when they were very little. The upgrade comes courtesy of Lowes Foods. It’s free with admission, which is $5 per person.
Historic Oak View County Park will celebrate the 10th birthday of their goats, Boyd, Walt and Quint. The Barnyard Bash is 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, at the Wake County park off Poole Road. It includes free cake, games and other activities, along with visits with the goats, of course!
The 2015 Cary Homeschooler’s Showcase is 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, at Middle Creek Community Center in Cary. The secular homeschool support group with more than 250 member families will showcase the various projects that students have been involved in during the year. Educational service providers also will be there to share information about their services. I suspect this is a great opportunity for homeschooling families and prospective families to get some ideas, tips and advice.
Cary’s annual Dog Days of June is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, at Fred G. Bond Metro Park. The day includes a canine Frisbee disc competition, information from local dog rescue groups, a dog wash and rabies vaccines and microchipping clinics. Friendly, leashed dogs and their people are welcome.
Piedmont Wildlife Center's second BioBlitz is Friday evening and all day Saturday at the Durham nature center. The public can drop in to join naturalists as they search for all varieties of plants and animals or take part in a variety of scheduled programs. The event, which also includes crafts and other activities, is free.
Morrisville SpringFest is 4 p.m. to 9 p..m., Saturday, at 100 Town Hall Dr. The evening includes carnival midway games, entertainment, bounce houses, food trucks and more. Admission is free, but there will be a charge for the games (and, of course, the food trucks).
Also in Morrisville, the town's fire department will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a parade and open house at 200 Town Hall Dr. The parade is at 10 a.m., Saturday, along Town Hall Drive. The open house runs until 2 p.m.
Soapstone United Methodist Church in Raleigh will hold its Strawberry Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday. The day includes strawberry samples, along with BBQ, bounce houses, music, games, food truck, and more.
Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park in Cary will celebrate its birthday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. During the event, kids can make noisemakers and march with KATAL, the Kids Together dragon in a kids’ parade. The afternoon also includes the telling of the Kids Together story, told in the style of Dr. Seuss. There’s also Roly Poly fruit slushies and more. The event is free.
