Swimming in the Dark: Other Voices of the American Experience - Carolina Chocolate Drops' singer Rhiannon Giddens joins folk singer/songwriter Bhi Bhiman and cellist/singer Leyla McCalla for this show at UNC Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall on Sunday. The show will delve into the profound yet too often overlooked history of protest, subversion and cultural resistance by musicians of color in the United States. Tickets start at $39

Metropolitan Opera Rising Stars - For more than 125 years, the Metropolitan Opera has been the artistic home of the greatest singers in the world. It is also a launching pad for the opera stars of the future. See some of those performers Saturday night at Carolina Theatre of Durham. Tickets start at $12.

Pop-Up Chorus at Motorco - Selections from Bruce Springsteen and The Eagles are on Friday night's set-list. Singing starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $10.
Vocalosity - This fast-paced a cappella show will play Carolina Theatre of Durham Friday night. It is the latest show from artistic producer Deke Sharon, who worked on the film "Pitch Perfect" and the TV competition "The Sing-Off." Tickets start at $27.
Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins, and Anaïs Mitchell - Three great American songwriters share the stage for an intimate presentation of their finest songs Friday night at Duke University's Page Auditorium. In this special show, they will sing from their own catalogues, back each other vocally and instrumentally, and recount the stories behind the songs.

Tift Merritt - The singer/songwriter plays Cat's Cradle Friday night.
Slayer - The rock band plays The Ritz in Raleigh Saturday night.
David Allen Coe, Jonathan Parker Band and Erik Smallwood Duo - See this show Saturday night at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh.

Lion King - The Tony Award winning musical continues its run at DPAC through March 20.
The Sklar Brothers - This comedy duo has a three night stint at Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh this weekend. The brothers will be taping material for their new Travel Channel Show, "Finding the Funny." Shows are Thursday through Saturday.

Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" - Head to William Peace University's Leggett Theatre this weekend to see this show. The production will be set amid the sights and sounds of exuberant teen romance in the 1980s. Audience members who want to get close to the action for a truly intimate experience may sit directly onstage in extended seating lining either side of the playing space. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. Shows run Thursday through Sunday.

Academy Awards

The Academy Awards are Sunday and there are a few local watch parties.

Hello Hollywood - Marbles Kids Museum's IMAX theater will host a watch party Saturday night, complete with hors d'oeuvres and dessert, a glass of champagne, red carpet photo op and a chance to win some exciting giveaways. General admission tickets are $20.
Rialto Theatre - The Rialto in Raleigh's party will include door prizes and film trivia. Admission is free. The theater sells beer and and wine, in addition to concessions and popcorn.
Raleighwood Cinema - This north Raleigh theater's annual party will include a celeb look-alike contest, free admission and prizes.

CWS Casino Night - Head to Marbles Kids Museum Saturday night for this benefit for Community Workforce Solutions, a private non-profit organization that provides employment and community integration opportunities for adults with disabilities. The fun-filled evening includes casino games, photo booth, raffles, a magician and food by Caffe Luna. Tickets are $50 per person.
Fortnight Brewing Oyster Roast - This Cary brewery is celebrating its two-year anniversary with a weekend of events, including an oyster roast and live music.
