Weekend best bets: Flip Flop Run, Food Truck Rodeo

RALEIGH, N.C. — Food truck rodeos and a BBQ contest, Tegan and Sara, the Bull City Jazz Fest, a tiki party and more top our list of best bets this weekend.

Guinness World Record Flip Flop 1K Run/Walk - The nOg Run Club, creators of the fairly epic St. Paddy's and Oktoberfest 8K, will host this event on Saturday at Bond Brothers Beer Company. This is the club's attempt to regain the Guinness World Record, which was broken by 40 participants last fall in Spain. This event is open to people of all ages. If you can walk a half a mile in flip flops, you can join in. Registration is $20 and includes an event shirt.

Pork Out BBQ Contest and Festival - About 20 teams will be competing in this contest at Lafayette Village on Saturday. Sample the food, listen to live music and have more fun. All proceeds from the contest will go to support Raleigh Rescue Mission.

Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo - This food truck rodeo boasts more 50 vendors spread out over 11 city blocks along Fayetteville Street. The event runs from noon to 7 p.m.

Downtown Cary Food and Flea - Hear musicians, try some wonderful food from local food truck and food artisans, drink locally-made craft beer and shop with some of the most creative crafters and artists Sunday at Ashworth Village in downtown Cary.

Sunday FUNday at North Hills - Head to Midtown Park on Sunday for this lawn party complete with your favorite lawn games, curated beverages and lots of shady spots. There will be live music, a rose garden and a champagne bar presented by The Haymaker.

Tiki Party - Fair Game Beverage will hold this birthday party featuring a tiki cocktail bar run by Crude Bitters and Sodas and Piedmont Picnic Project, a tap takeover from Four Saints Brewing Company and food from Brinehaus Meat + Provisions on Saturday. A portion of proceeds will benefit Abundance NC.

A Place at the Table Brunch - 18 Seaboard hosts this pay-what-you-can event on Saturday.

Haymaker Anniversary - To celebrate the occasion, the bar is holding its first Bartender Bout on Sunday. The talented bartenders will go head to head in a cocktail-off. Come taste their concoctions and help vote for the winner and the bartender that will take home the golden trophy. There will also be a dessert bar and DJ in house spinning vinyl.

Junetoberfest - It's like Oktoberfest in June. The Durham Co-op Market will host this third annual German style festival. There will be local beer, food and music. Tickets are $20.

The King and I - Lincoln Center Theater’s critically acclaimed production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s "The King and I" plays DPAC this week. The classic boasts a score which features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.”

Avenue Q - Recent college grad Princeton moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. Along with his new friends, Princeton struggles to find a job, date and discover an ever-elusive purpose in life. Filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention puppets, this truly unique show has quickly become a favorite for audiences everywhere. See it at Raleigh Little Theatre through June 25.

Rhythm of Race - This special event provides the community with a unique opportunity to enjoy a day of multi-cultural poetry, music and dance that echoes the key messages of the “RACE” exhibition — that we are more alike than different and that artistic expression can build bridges between people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. See it at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Saturday.

The Mask - See this classic comedy in City Plaza Friday night as part of the PNC Downtown Raleigh outdoor movie series.

Tegan and Sara - Over eight albums and nearly two decades, Tegan and Sara Quin, identical twins from Canada, have evolved from a folk duo to acclaimed indie-rockers and then to a glossier dance-pop powerhouse. See them Friday night at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

SoSo Summer Tour - This tour features acts seen on the first three seasons of Lifetime TV’s “The Rap Game” including winners Miss Mulatto and Mani. See it Sunday night at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

A Night with James Hodge - Watch this comic blend hilarious social commentary with musings about his life as a father and husband. James regularly tours with comedy legend Dave Chappelle. See Hodge at DSI Comedy Chapel Hill Friday night.

Donnell Rawlings - You've seen Donnell on Comedy Central's "Chappelle's Show," NBC's "Law and Order" and HBO's "The Wire." See him at Goodnights Comedy Club Friday and Saturday.

Allman Brothers Band Tribute - Idlewild South will be performing live with friends at the Lincoln Theatre Saturday night to celebrate the music of the Allman Brothers Band.
