RALEIGH, N.C. — After a soggy, humid start to the week, a cooler air mass was settling into central North Carolina Tuesday, bringing an autumnal chill and the chance for more rain over the next few days, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

A cold front moved through the area Monday evening, whipping up strong winds from the north and northwest. The system stalled along the North Carolina coast overnight, setting up a wet pattern that could linger for several days.

Cooler air also made its way into the Triangle overnight, and daytime highs Tuesday will struggle to reach the 60s.

"It's normal for us to start seeing big chances in our day-to-day highs this time of year," Gardner said. "We've got the battle going on between summer and winter, and that will definitely be on display over the next several days."

Highs Wednesday and Thursday will remain in the mid-60s with a continuing threat of rain.

"Areas along the coast will see the most rain, but areas in the eastern part of our viewing area could see between a half an inch and 1 inch by the weekend," Gardner said.

Highs will reach the low 70s again by the end of the work week, but clouds will linger over the weekend to help keep the pattern cool.
