Wednesday wrap: Day of false starts
The Senate continued to delay a final vote on a tax reform proposal as negotiations with other lawmakers continue behind the scene.
Posted — UpdatedAlso Wednesday, the House abruptly stopped debate on a bill that would allow the speed limit on some North Carolina highways to be raised to 75 mph. The legislation was moved to Thursday's House calendar.
Meanwhile, speculation that a bill recognizing several state symbols would be gutted and used as a vehicle for other legislation proved to be unfounded. The Senate Health Committee passed the bill so that it could move through the Senate on the same day that the House recognized Wilson artist Vollis Simpson, whose whirligigs were recognized as the state's official folk art.
Other legislation that moved Wednesday included a proposed reorganization of the Commerce Department, a new highway funding formula and a bill that would roll back some state restrictions on landfills and trash hauling.
