In a floor session that stretched past the four-hour mark, House members handled about two dozen bills, including approving changes to the Wake County Board of Commissioners and defeating proposed changes to advance health care directives.
Posted — UpdatedFour House members also introduced a bill that would require a 72-hour waiting period to get an abortion – up from the current 24 hours – and would preclude UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina from providing any elective abortions. UNC Hospitals officials said the proposal might hinder their ability to train doctors.
Meanwhile, three senators killed their bill that would have added vaccines to the list required for enrollment in North Carolina schools and eliminated the religious exemption to receiving the shots. The proposal met with a great deal of public backlash, and the sponsors said they had heard the complaints and wouldn't fight them.
A House committee also heard conflicting proposals on whether North Carolina should call for a constitutional convention that would draft amendments to the Constitution.
