  1. Ships to ride out Tropical Storm Hanna on open seas
    Tropical storm warning issued for whole N.C. coast

    Despite sunny skies and then a cool, soft night breeze, voluntary evacuations began in coastal counties, and ships left port to ride out the storm. A state of emergency covers the whole state ahead of possible hits from Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike.

    Hanna to blow through Triangle Saturday

    Forecasters predict that Tropical Storm Hanna won't wash out the weekend in the Triangle. But Raleigh re-arranged the concert schedules for its block party, and crews worked to lessen the chance of flooding in surrounding counties.

Question: How many inches of rain did the western U.S. make up during the winter? Did it help the drought?

Answer: Over such a large area, it's difficult to pin down a value, but the southwestern U.S. generally received about 2-5 times normal precipitation through the winter, which greatly aided with the drought situation there. The northwest was not as lucky, and needs significant rainfall to ameliorate the drought conditions there, as indicated at www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/drought/current.html.
