— The heat wave that has scorched the middle of the country is heading east, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms into central North Carolina Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Heat advisories, which mean that humidity will make temperatures feel like 105 to 110 degrees for at least three hours, were in effect Wednesday for much of central North Carolina. Those advisories kick in again at noon on Thursday.

The high hit 100 degrees at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

"This may be only the beginning of an extended period of excruciating heat and humidity around here that will carry us forward well into the weekend," said WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel.  WRAL Weather team WRAL WeatherCenter Forecast

The National Weather Service predicts that, by Friday, it will feel hotter than 110 degrees in Raleigh and 107 or above in Greensboro and Charlotte.

The sticky weather also means nighttime lows may hover around 80, offering little relief.

After a 100-degree weekend, scorching temperatures are expected to stick around through next week.

The increase in mercury can be dangerous, especially for the elderly. Doctors say that's because older people have less water in their bodies, making it more difficult to sense temperature changes and thirst.  Heat can be dangerous, especially for elderly Heat can be dangerous, especially for elderly

People who are battling chronic illness or upper respiratory ailments may also be more likely to wind up hospitalized when temperatures creep toward the century mark, emergency room doctors say.

Heat-related illness and injuries doubled this week over the same week last year at WakeMed in Raleigh.

That's why deputies with the Wake County Sheriff's Office make wellness checks on the elderly everyday.

On Wednesday, deputies said they called all 75 people on their wellness check list twice, just to be safe.

Dark of the Moon - Like many of your ilk you confuse weather with climate change. The temperature of the earth is rising... measurably rising. The debate is "Why?" and "What will be affected by this increase?" One area that has been studied is climate change.

ThatGuyAgain - Hmm... believe your silly little FAUX news stories... the REALITY is that the earth is getting warmer - FACT. What is open to debate is the reason for that heating. Denying the reality of the planet getting warmer because of some small-minded story on FAUX news is like denying the force of gravity. Now THAT'S HILARIOUS!!!!

I Think I Am More Conservative, Than Liberal.

It sure Does Feel Like It Is Getting Warmer, But I Just Don't Know You Hear So Much On Both Sides.

I Can See Anything Man Does To Increase The Temps, And I Don't See It Getting Any better Until We Run Out Of Oil.

But Then Again We Would Probably Blow Up The World At That Point Wanting That Last Remaining Stick Of Wood To Burn To Keep Warm.

    YKM,
I dont hunt, i do fish. I'm an avid fisherman, and what i want most is for my children to be able to fish, or hunt if they so choose. None of which will happen if the human race does not change its ways.

The funny thing is that most radical righties know the globe is warming up but they are so tired of being wrong all the time while the democrats are right, that they just can't admit it out loud. Funny.

aclemmons I can't help it if I look at the positives in most situations. As for the discussion it's a do over. Every time we have a hot day or a cold day the same old stuff is posted. I take it you don't hunt. How about fishin imagine the fish ya might could catch or the crops we could grow. One thing is for sure it's not going to stay the same no matter what is done. It's called evolution.

It must make you feel safe to put everyone in a little box and lable them crazy, or left wing, or liberal, or earthers. We all live on the same planet. If you havent noticed just how polluted it has become, then i hope your water supply lasts. THere is a third of earths population right now that has no access to clean water. You dont have to be a earther to care about your planet.

a hot day today does not mean the sky is falling, nor does a cold winter mean an ice age is comming. However, if you think there is nothing wrong with all the pollution WE PUT in our air and water, and you think it has no effect on our world, locally or globally, then we have a serious problem. THat problem is not with AGW evangelicals, it with those who like to label everyone in one extreme catergory or another. Again, have you been watching too much Fox news?
