RALEIGH, N.C. — Thunderstorms rolled through several central North Carolina counties Tuesday night, causing large hail, flash floods and dangerous lightning.

A Cumberland County man was struck by lightning shortly before 8 p.m., authorities said. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but his name and condition were not released.

Severe thunderstorms rumbled through Wake, Johnston, Cumberland, Lee, Harnett, Hoke and Alamance counties until about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Downpours hammered Hoke, Lee, Cumberland, Moore and parts of Harnett and Sampson counties throughout the evening, said WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze. Some areas got up to five inches of rain, he said.

Several WRAL viewers reported seeing quarter to golf ball-sized hail during the storms.

Earlier in the evening, viewers in several southern counties reported heavy rains, hail and lightning strikes.

Hot, dry and windy conditions throughout the day Tuesday fueled wildfires in Bladen, Pender, Dare and Hyde counties, causing hazy and smoky air conditions in the Triangle.

The fires in Bladen and Pender counties were started by lightning strikes, authorities said.
