Lightning sparks two house fires in Triangle
Lightning sparked house fires in Raleigh and Chapel Hill Friday as strong thunderstorms dumped heavy rain and caused flooding across central North Carolina.
Posted — UpdatedChapel Hill firefighters said that a fire started in a two-story house at 107 Tharrington Drive around 1:30 p.m. Heavy flames poured from the gables when crews arrived, and five fire companies labored in heavy rain to bring it under control in 15 minutes.
No one was injured in the fire, but it caused an estimated $175,000 in damage, fire officials said.
A 911 caller reported a fire in a house at 5049 Delta Lake Drive in Raleigh around 5 p.m., Lt. Adam Stanley said. Fire crews saw smoke coming from the eaves of the roof, and approximately 30 firefighters battled the one-alarm blaze.
No one was home at the time, and no injuries were reported.
The fire damaged about 20 percent of the home, making it uninhabitable, Stanely said.
