Storm aftermath prompts closings in NC

Damages sustained in a swarm of tornadoes that swept central and eastern North Carolina Saturday have caused closings throughout the region.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Damages sustained in a swarm of tornadoes that swept central and eastern North Carolina Saturday have caused closings throughout the region.

Shaw University in Raleigh has suspended classes for the duration of the spring semester due to severe damage to numerous buildings in and around campus.

The state headquarters for the Division of Motor Vehicles, 1100 New Bern Ave. in Raleigh, will be closed Monday due to roof and structural damage caused by the storm, a DMV spokeswoman said. The building is still without power. All DMV employess are instructed not to report to work. 

St. Augustine's College, 1315 Oakwood Ave. in Raleigh, will be closed Monday as the campus recovers from tornado damages. Classes are expected to resume Tuesday. The cafeteria will operate on a holiday schedule and the library will be open.

Greene County schools will be closed Monday. A tornado demolished Greene County Middle School Saturday and school officials have not commented on what they will do to accommodate the school's 600 students.

Five schools in Wake County will be closed Monday due to storm damage: Harris Creek Elementary, Moore Square Middle, Holly Grove Elementary, Holly Grove Middle and Holly Springs Elementary. Wake Technical Community College canceled classes at the Adult Education Center and its annex for Monday due to a power outage. All other Wake Tech campuses will have classes as usual.  Schools in the Union District of Sampson County will be closed Monday, a school district spokeswoman said. Schools in the Hobbton, Midway and Lakewood districts will open on a two-hour delay. Sampson County Community College will be closed as well. Harnett and Cumberland County schools will operate on a two-hour delay Monday, officials said Sunday. Pine Forest High School and Ben Martin Elementary School in Cumberland County will be closed. Employees should report as usual, a school spokeswoman said Sunday. Pine Forest staff will meet at the county's Educational Resource Center at 10 a.m. and Ben Martin staff at 11:30 a.m. Fort Bragg, including Fort Bragg schools, will operate on a two-hour delay for all Army employees, except adverse weather personnel. For more information on closings, click here.
