Winter weather expected to hit Triangle Tuesday

WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner said it's too early to tell whether it will be an all-rain event or an all-snow event. If it does snow, she said, it's too early to tell how much snow will fall in central North Carolina.

"It's going to be a very narrow transition zone between the snow and the rain," Deaner said. "So there's a potential that here in Raleigh, we see nothing but rain, but just off to the northwest, say Roxboro back into Chapel Hill, maybe even into Durham, could see snow."

She said the impact of the storm and how much snow falls depends on when the winter weather system arrives in the state. 

"If the event gets here while the air is still very cold in all levels of the atmosphere, then it's going to be an all-snow event," Deaner said.

Snow fell along the coast Saturday afternoon, coating Emerald Isle, Ocean Isle and Morehead City.

Temperatures were expected to remain low throughout the weekend.

"It is going to be a little on the frigid side," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss, with a high around 36 degrees Saturday and 44 degrees Sunday. Temperatures will dip into the low 20s both nights.

The state Department of Transportation and town of Cary sent out crews Saturday to treat roads with an anti-icing mixture of brine.

Monday and Tuesday will both see a high around 39 degrees and a low around 30 degrees.
