Drizzle, freezing rain follow snow in Triangle

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday for parts of the Triangle and areas north and east.

"We're concerned that after midnight, when temperatures drop below freezing, there could be problems with black ice," WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said. "Especially tomorrow morning as folks get going to church."

"The majority of snow fell from Raleigh north," said WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner. 

Deaner said most areas saw a dusting of snow.

Deaner said temperatures will mainly stay above freezing until after midnight, but drizzle and freezing rain may cause patches of ice on the roadways, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

The Department of Transportation was taking a "wait and see" approach Saturday before spreading brine, a mixture of salt and water that prevents ice and snow from sticking to the road, to Wake County roads.

They have crews on standby if conditions worsen throughout the night.

"Overnight, we drop into the 20s, with maybe some light drizzle, maybe some freezing rain," Deaner said. "That's what you're gonna wake up to tomorrow morning, more likely just a bit of a mist, which will begin to dry out as we move through the day."

The clouds are expected to roll out Sunday with sunshine and highs in the low 40s by 5 p.m.

Monday is expected to be precipitation-free, with highs in the low 40s. Tuesday has a shot at spotty, light precipitation, but temperatures are expected to be warm enough to keep it just rain.
