Black ice possible overnight
The remnants of a winter storm is expected to freeze creating black ice on bridges and overpasses overnight Saturday, WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner said.
Posted — UpdatedRoad conditions are expected to be dicey particularly after midnight when temperatures begin to fall below freezing.
"There could be problems with black ice, especially tomorrow morning as folks get going to church," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze.
The state Department of Transportation was taking a "wait and see" approach Saturday before spreading brine, a mixture of salt and water that prevents ice and snow from sticking to the road, to Wake County roads.
They have spread the solution in Harnett, Robeson and Cumberland counties where more snowfall was expected.
They have crews on standby to put down salt and sand on trouble spots if conditions worsen throughout the night.
The DOT said motorists should be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses.
"We'll have to watch around daybreak tomorrow for the possibility of any leftover slush or water on some of the bridges and overpasses possibly freezing, because we'll have lows in the upper 20s and low 30s," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss.
