Rain to give way to bitter cold
Steady rain will fall across North Carolina Sunday. Cold air will seep in after the rain, bringing a bitterly cold start to the work week.
Posted — Updated"You can't have everything, so we're going to trade in this relatively mild weather with the rain," WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson said. "We're going to see some sunshine this week, but it's going to be cold. You sort of pick your poison around here this time of year."
A cold front sweeping in from the northwest will spread across the WRAL viewing area, bringing steady rain with it. The rain will taper off by mid-afternoon, though a light drizzle might linger later.
"We're going to see everybody seeing some rain before the day is out," Johnson said.
Behind the front, cold air will seep into the state.
After a high around 50 degrees Sunday, Monday's high won't break above the upper 30s. Tuesday will be the coldest day of the week. The high might not even break above the freezing mark.
The chilliest weather will come at nighttime, when lows sink into the teens.
"Those lows overnight – 18 and 15 (degrees) – this is really dangerous stuff, though. So if you’ve got pets and they live outside, those are nights to bring them inside," Johnson said. "It really can be dangerous to the critters out there."
Somewhat milder weather will return toward the end of the week. The highs will creep back into the 40s on Thursday.
