N.C. mountains get snow; central counties expect freeze
North Carolina is getting a brief taste of cold weather this weekend. A freeze warning is in effect for much of the state Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

Overnight, temperatures will plummet into the upper 20s in the western Piedmont and to near freezing in the southern coastal plain.
Those low temperatures can kill crops, house plants and other sensitive vegetation kept outdoors. Such plants should be protected from the cold weather.
"Definitely, bring those pets inside," WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner said.
Much frost, though, isn't expected, because the air will be dry.
Snow coated higher elevations in the western mountains late Friday, and central counties are on watch for freezing temperatures Saturday night.
By Friday night, Avery County reported accumulations of 3 to 4 inches in places, while Haywood, Madison, Mitchell and Swain counties had gotten a light dusting.
In anticipation of the cold weather, the town of Hillsborough disconnected the freestanding water fountains at Gold and Turnip Patch parks. The fountains will remain disconnected through spring.
Sunday will see a high in the mid 50s again, and temperatures will drop into the low to mid 30s.
