Weekend begins with bout of severe weather
A heavy downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning, passed through the Triangle Friday afternoon.
Posted — UpdatedMuch of the eastern half of North Carolina was under a severe thunderstorm watch Friday. The watch was canceled, but the chance of showers continued overnight, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.
Trees were down in several locations in Holly Springs, including one that fell on a house at 1001 Skymont Drive.
In the Sunset Ridge neighborhood in Holly Springs, powerful winds caused trees to fall on three homes.
Homeowner Jennifer Gilbert said she thought the tree falling on her home was a tornado.
“The kids were asleep. We got the kids. We were going to the pantry,” Gilbert said.
"The chance of hit-and-miss storms is present every day in the forecast," Maze said.
