Residents clean up after severe storms

The storm system caused damage across central and eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia. The National Weather Service received 49 reports of wind damage, 13 of hail and four of tornadoes – including two from Beaufort County.

The storms also did significant damage to homes in the Anderson Creek area of Harnett County. The roof of Delt West's house was smashed by a tree.

“I was born here. Also, 10 more (people) beyond me were born here,” West said.

Neighbors helped take the roof down and cut the tree leaning on the house Saturday.

West rents the property to Jay Nicol. He says his family was at a shopping mall when they heard about the storm's wrath.

“I thought a tornado rolled through. But apparently there wasn't a tornado yesterday, just bad luck,” he said.

Nicol says none of his family's valuables inside the house were damaged.

I plan to “restore it (the house) back like it once was,” West said.

West estimates the storm did about $20,000 worth of damage to the house.

By Saturday evening, power had been restored to the majority of Progress and Duke Energy customers.
