RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures will continue to fall overnight as a cold front passes over North Carolina from the northwest, and lows will dip into the mid 40s.
Sunday afternoon, areas west and north from Raleigh and Rocky Mount had fallen into the upper 50s as rain fell steadily throughout the day.

The Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport got 1.24 inches of rain, Roanoke Rapids saw 1.02 inches and Goldsboro .37 inches over the last 48 hours.

Raleigh's rainfall total of 0.29 inches was more typical of the remainder of the WRAL viewing area.

The rainfall sparked floods and mudslides in western counties.

The National Weather Service reported that flooding damaged roads and private bridges in Madison County, as well as flooding in Caldwell and Jackson counties. The Asheville Citizen-Times reported a culvert under one road washed away, and work crews were trying to build a temporary bridge so residents could leave their homes.

Chilly start to the work week
Monday will get the work week off to a chilly, wet start. A chance of showers lingers through the morning, and the day will start off in the 40s.

Temperatures will begin a gradual warm-up Tuesday, reaching 70 degrees that day and close to 80 degrees on Wednesday. The skies will also stay clear those days.

"The rest of the seven-day period will begin seeing temperatures where they should be for this time of the year. So it is only going to be a couple of nights with temperatures so much cooler," WRAL meteorologist Kim Deaner said.
