After muggy days, Labor Day could be 'glorious'
The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay will sigh a hot, muggy, last breath over North Carolina Friday. But a cold front coming in Saturday will bring drier, cooler air – just in time for Labor Day.
Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay will move out early this weekend, leaving room for a cold front to usher in drier, cooler air by Labor Day.
Friday, though, will stay hot and humid, with a small chance of a few showers and storms. The high will be around 88 degrees.
"We're still dealing with the air mass remnants of Tropical Storm Fay. We are dealing with a tropical air mass," WRAL Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.
"And, of course, what will come from that is a very muggy, steamy day."
That humidity created morning fog that reduced visibility to less than a tenth of a mile in some places during the rush hour.
Conditions will be the same on Saturday morning, but Fay's influence will "start to fade out," Gardner said.
A cold front will move through the area in the afternoon. Combined with the warm, humid air, that front could spark storms in the afternoon and evening.
"Relief will come behind this front. ... It's going to open the door to some cooler and drier air," Gardner said.
The front's passage will continue to create some instability in the atmosphere Sunday, but the system should be settled in place by Labor Day. That will mean less humid air, not a chance of rain and cooler temperatures.
"Monday could be glorious," Gardner said.
A stretch of sunny, dry, cooler weather is predicted to follow.
