RALEIGH, N.C. — Valentine's Day got off to a snowy and slippery start in some areas of Central North Carolina, but skies are clear and blue this afternoon.

The snow as a pleasant surprise for students who spent the morning out of the classroom enjoying the winter weather.

Most of the Triangle endured a wet, cold morning, but areas north and west measured up to four inches of the white stuff. WFMY News 2 in Greensboro reported that most of the Triad saw between 2 and 3 inches of snow. Heavier amounts fell to the north, in Rockingham and Caswell counties.

By noon, the precipitation had cleared and blue skies returned.

"A lot of that snow's going to be history pretty quickly," WRAL Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.  The forecast calls for a slight warm up, into the low-50s, later in the day with light winds. Overnight lows will dip back close to the freezing mark before a beautiful Friday.

The weekend forecast is more on track with the average for mid-February, with daytime highs topping out in the low-50s and nighttime lows in the 30s.
