Steamy Tuesday could end in storms

— Showers and thunderstorms could once again have an impact on central and eastern North Carolina Tuesday as warm, moist air filters into the area behind a warm front, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

"We could see showers and thunderstorms on and off all day today," she said. "They'll be moving through the area from south to north as all this moisture moves up from the Gulf of Mexico."

Fog was a factor in some spots during the early-morning commute, but didn't create any major issues on Triangle roadways. Officials in Mecklenburg County, Virginia delayed schools one hour because of thick fog.

Bu noon, temperatures had climbed into the high 70s in the Triangle, and humidity topped 80 percent.

Tuesday's warmer temperatures will accompany a more unstable air mass that's settling into the area after the passage of a warm front. There is a 70 percent chance for storms through the afternoon.

"While the chance of severe storms today is quite low, an isolated cell with strong wind gusts or a tornado is not out of the question," Gardner said.   Traffic - I-40 and Harrison Ave. Triangle traffic cams

Wednesday's weather will be similar as overnight lows hover in the upper 60s and high temperatures climb back into the mid-80s. Areas to the east of the Triangle will be especially prone to showers and storms Wednesday afternoon, but most of the state will remain mostly cloudy with the chance for rain.

Sunshine returns on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but temperatures will remain in the low 80s.

"We have a front that will move through the area Saturday night to bring us our next cooling trend," Gardner said. "Sunday's high could be in the mid-60s, about 20 degrees cooler than Saturday."

"Could have an impact"? If it rains anywhere near the Triangle, it WILL have an impact on the commute.

It is SO MUGGY outside! Where did October go??

Where I live near downtown Raleigh it seems we have had torrential rain and thunderstorms almost every day/night for the last 5 months. This last "dry spell" before the rain moved back in didn't last very long. I guess I am used to the dry weather out west.

"Maybe this is not scientific enough for you-or you just want to argue, whatever."

    Ding ding ding.

SEAN-Not now. Look at pond levels all over Eastern and Central NC. Many are still below their traditional levels. They are still recovering! In some areas, water table changes may have taken place.

Point is, after a week of dryness last week, we were seeing 3"-6" drops in pond levels in Western JoCo. Maybe this is not scientific enough for you-or you just want to argue, whatever.

When you live off of a well(best tasting water ever), you pay much closer attention to pond levels and rainfall amounts.

I think this guy just likes to hear himself complain. What would you have said if the article stated "Showers and Storms will have an impact on the commute"? Let me take a stab at it:

"Will have an impact? Will? Are you serious? Are you saying it will rain everywhere in the viewing area today? Not a chance."

baldchip - "We have done pretty well in recovering from the drought conditions of several years ago, but we are 3 weeks with no rain away from being right back in that boat."

According to the NC Drought Advisory Council there are NO areas in NC suffering from drought. I am not sure where you got your information that we are only "recovering" from the drought or "3 weeks of no rain away" from drought?

Unsettled rainy weather, and the State Fair is right around the corner! Sure hope we have better weather this year, not rain for several days as last year. I soooo enjoy working there each year.
