RALEIGH, N.C. — Sunshine and high humidity will make the first day of fall feel more like summer across much of central North Carolina, but cooler temperatures will arrive Sunday thanks to an approaching cold front.

Afternoon high temperatures should climb into the mid-80s across much of the Triangle Saturday, making four local football games and other outdoor activities a "very pleasant" way to usher in fall, WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said.

"The Autumnal Equinox was at 10:49 a.m., so by this afternoon our temperatures won't feel quite like the season," he said. "We're going to see high dew points too, so it will feel pretty sticky."

A dry cold front will pass through the area late in the day, ushering in dry air and much cooler temperatures for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

"We can't rule out a stray shower this afternoon, mainly between 8 p.m. and midnight, but most of us should stay dry," Moss said.

Temperatures and dew points will tumble overnight and remain pleasant Sunday, as highs climb into the mid-70s. Overnight Sunday, temperatures will fall even more, dipping into the upper 40s for the first time since May.

"We're going to see 40s again for the first time since May 12," Moss said. "Temperatures will stay cool Tuesday morning too before they start to warm back up during the middle of next week."
