String of 100-degree days ties record
The Triangle has never seen six days in a row in which the temperature reached 100 degrees. But Saturday marked the fifth such day, and triple digits are in the forecast for Sunday, according to WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth.
Posted — UpdatedAt 4 p.m., Raleigh-Durham International Airport was reporting 101 degrees with a heat index of 106. The day's high was 102, Wilmoth said.
The National Weather Service issued heat advisories for all of eastern North Carolina through 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. again for Sunday.
By 9 p.m., the temperature was still above 90 degrees, but music lovers agreed the delay made the concert both safer and more comfortable.
The overnight low will dip only to about the mid-70s, Wilmoth said.
The heat also compromised air quality. The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources designated Saturday a "Code Orange," and suggested that children, older adults and others with health issues limit time outdoors.
Sunday could be the day the Triangle breaks the record if the forecast high, 102 degrees, holds.
"It will be very hot again with just a few clouds and the chance for widely scattered thunderstorms," Wilmoth said.
Monday should see a break in the weather, with a high only reaching the mid-90s before a cold front brings a true cooldown by midweek, Wilmoth said.
Temperatures will dip into the mid-80s on Tuesday and remain cool throughout the week as the front – which could drop several inches of rain across the region – hovers over the area until Thursday.
