RALEIGH, N.C. — Rain showers that moved through central North Carolina overnight won't linger into the day Thursday, but cloudy conditions and cool weather will stay put thanks to an upper level disturbance, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

High temperatures will top out around 70 degrees in the Triangle, slightly below normal for mid-April, after barely climbing into the 60s during the day Wednesday.

"We're done with the rain, at least until the weekend," Gardner said. "But the clouds are going to stick around all day, helping to keep us cooler."

Partly cloudy skies and high temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80 will return Friday, but the sunshine won't hang around for the weekend. Scattered thunderstorms return to the forecast on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday much of the area will see rain throughout the day.

Gardner said some spots could see up to 1 inch of rain by the end of the weekend. Areas to the south and east of the Triangle saw almost that much rain late Wednesday and early Thursday as a patch of heavier showers moved through central and eastern North Carolina.

"Some of the computer models are wanting to back off on the rainfall totals we could see by Sunday evening, but we're still looking at a very wet Saturday night and Sunday."

High temperatures will be warm again Saturday, climbing into the low 80s before dropping back to near 70 on Sunday.
