— Schools were delayed in northern North Carolina counties Monday, but a system that had the potential to deliver snowfall fizzled.

"Around here, we've been on snow patrol, but we haven't seen anything. We've even been having trouble getting sprinkles out of this system," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

School openings were delayed by two hours in Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties. (See the full list of closings and delays.) App State webcam 1/25/13 NC weather webcams

A winter weather advisory that had covered more than a dozen counties – including Granville, Halifax, Person, Vance and Warren – until noon was cancelled by mid-morning.

Warming temperatures and low moisture levels doomed the chances for snow.

"Our atmosphere is so dry, it's evaporating before hitting the ground, and this system isn't ever really going to have much 'umph' to do much," Gardner said.

The system delivering the chance for snow is an Alberta clipper. Coming from the north and west, such systems carry less moisture and pass by more quickly than moisture-laden systems from the south that normally deliver the most snow to North Carolina.

After this system moves through, temperatures should warm to the mid 50s in the Triangle and upper 40s in northern counties Monday afternoon.

Tuesday will see similar highs, and then the 60s return for the rest of the work week. By next weekend, the mercury could hit the 70-degree mark.

"Perhaps yallll should secede from the union again. This time we might let you. The only reason we did not allow it last time was that we knew that in a few years Mexico would have overrun the South and we did not want the Mason Dixon line to be the US/Mexico boarder.

oh chouseworth, you don't have to watche WRAL or come here to their website if you don't want to......nobody is making you do that. And by the way, every single station in the 'veiwing' area had the very same information. All of them said the same thing......you must really be bored today if all you have to do is come HERE and complain......

When is the WRAL team going to start reporting the weather, instead of acting like a bunch of eighth graders and cheerleading for a few of the precious flakes? Oh, I forgot, for them it is all about ratings and maximizing viewership. Just goes to show how dumbed down the viewership is.

sunshine1040, to be fair, with both parents working in most households, maybe the forecasters want to give as much notice as possible in case the schools close. 'Course I realize both parents have been working since before 30 years ago, so maybe there's another reason.

Anyway, can we stop calling each other names? Or at least call names over more important topics than weather?

seankelly: I only heard of watches, not warnings. And if noaa predicts the weather, then why do we have local meterologists? And, I am my own person, not split personalitys.
