RALEIGH, N.C. — The 20-degree difference between Sunday and Tuesday reflects an adjustment to "normal" for late November in the Triangle.

Heavy rain blanketed central North Carolina overnight, but began to clear by 9:30 a.m. Tuesday following the passage of a slow-moving cold front.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said the front dropped as much as 2 inches of rain in some areas of Moore County and up to an inch of rain in many areas of the Triangle.

Skies will become variably cloudy by mid-day, but a passing low pressure system could bring a shower during the afternoon hours, Gardner said.

Skies should begin to clear late in the day, making way for cooler temperatures and sunny conditions for the latter half of the week.

The cold air streaming in behind the front will bring the chance of snow Tuesday in the North Carolina mountains, with some areas likely to get one to four inches.

"There is plenty of cold air coming," Gardner said. "We'll be seeing this big, cold air mass and it should stick with us for awhile."

Highs Tuesday will climb into the mid 50s after topping out near 70 Monday and will drop into the 30s overnight.

Sunny conditions will return for the latter half of the week. Highs will be in the mid 50s to near 60 Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with lows falling into the mid 30s.

"It will feel much more winter-like," said Gardner. "But Thursday is the first day of December, so it is what we expect for this time of year."
