Rain chances to hang around through Wednesday

The unsettled weather pattern that has brought showers and storms to the Triangle for much of the last week will hang around for the next few days, continuing to produce warm, muggy air and afternoon showers and thunderstorms, WRAL Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said Monday. 

The sun will peek through the clouds at times Monday morning, Gardner said, but by afternoon the day-time heating will produce scattered showers throughout the area.

Highs will reach into the low 80s Monday. Gardner said some afternoon showers could produce locally heavy rain. 

"The trend has been warm, muggy with a lot of cloud cover and afternoon showers and thunderstorms," she said. "We do have a good chance of some showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon. The steady flow of moisture will continue and that's going to bring us more warm and sticky air."

Highs will reach into the low to mid-80s during the first half of the week. Lows will fall into the mid-60s.

Fall weather should return to the area by week's end, as a cold front will bring sunshine and much cooler temperatures.

Weekend highs shouldn't reach above 70 while overnight lows will dip into the mid-50s. 

"By late Wednesday and early Thursday we could start to push some of this out," Gardner said of the warm, unsettled air mass. "We have a front that will come through Friday but it probably won't bring us any rain. Really looking forward to some of this weather over the weekend. It will really be feeling like fall."
