We will likely have more sunshine this afternoon, hence perhaps it will warm up a few degrees more than what we thought. It will be breezy but dry this afternoon. The chance of rain increases tonight and so does the chance of some snow or sleet mixed in with the rain tomorrow morning. Wind: SW, 10-15 mph.

Friday

Mostly cloudy and colder with the chance of some light rain perhaps mixed with some snow and sleet in the morning. Highs in the lower-mid 40s. The front is to our east, but some energy behind the front will sustain the cloud cover and the development of some light precipitation. During the course of the day, this precipitation should shift eastward towards the coast. We should see increasing sunshine from west to east during the afternoon. Wind: NE, 5-10 mph.

Sunny, windy and colder. Wind: NW, 15-20 mph.

Question: I'm in Clayton and just installed an irrigation system. Should I worry about my pipes freezing in winter?

Answer: A check of data for the past 36 months in the Clayton area shows that the monthly average of soil temperature daily minimum did not go below 37 degrees at a depth of 4 inches(http://www.nc-climate.ncsu.edu/cronos). But in case of a very cold winter, you should follow the manufacturer's procedure for draining it and protecting it from winter damage.
