Winter Solstice

We're under 24 hours now from the Winter Solstice, which is a point in the Earth's orbit that we will reach around 5:44 AM Wednesday. At that moment, the north pole is tilted away from the sun at its greatest angle of the year, and so we will see the shortest period of daylight between sunrise and sunset of the year, as well as the lowest peak elevation angle of the sun above the horizon, at about 30.8 degrees (compared to just under 78 degrees at the Summer Solstice in June). It appears we'll have a slightly warmer than normal start to traditional winter, with lots of sun, a few high clouds and light winds.
