Federal forecasters are predicting yet another busy hurricane season. Thursday's outlook calls for 13 to 20 named storms, 7 to 11 that strengthen into hurricanes and 3 to 6 that become major hurricanes.
Top researchers at N.C. State have concluded that the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, is bound to have an active hurricane season.
Since the early 1990s, taxpayers have spent more than $30 million repairing a vulnerable stretch of N.C. Highway 12 after storms battered the Outer Banks. Some areas have been fixed multiple times. Critics say the state is wasting money in a relentless battle between nature and man, while supporters say it is a vital link that must be saved.
Samaritan's Purse, out of Boone, is helping provide relief to victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey.
Gary Lackmann, a professor at North Carolina State University, has written three papers on climate change and continues to study the subject. WRAL chief meteorologist Greg Fishel visited him to get his opinion on whether climate change caused Hurricane Sandy.
