Heads up, college students! A new term means a fresh opportunity to intern in the WRAL WeatherCenter.
Our internship program is open to juniors or seniors enrolled in a four-year college program, ideally in meteorology or the atmospheric sciences, who have the permission of their academic adviser. To be eligible, you must receive college credit for the internship; typically, this comes in the form of an "internship" or "independent study" course you will take during the term you're interning. (Ask your adviser for details.) We are looking for interns for both the summer (begin in mid-May) and fall (begin in mid-August) terms.
Our current intern, John Boyer, is a graduating senior in meteorology at NC State. He has had a full experience with us this spring. He's worked on our graphic systems, been able to work with our DUALDoppler5000 and Fayetteville radar systems, and compiled some great weather data for use on our broadcasts. He's also been in the thick of things during a couple of severe weather outbreaks, getting a taste of breaking weather coverage in a top-25 TV market. Here's what he had to say about the experience:
"I am a spring-semester senior balancing the demands of a full class schedule and all that it entails. As someone serious about pursuing broadcast meteorology, the extra hours interning at WRAL are the best use of my time. Each day presents the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in classes while learning from the experience of all of the meteorologists. From learning the graphics software to watching severe weather coverage, I’ve picked up a lot of experience that can set me apart as a candidate for a career in broadcast."
This is an unpaid internship, but our next intern will, like John, get a wide-ranging taste of the news operation at WRAL, in-depth experience working alongside our meteorologists, and plenty of time and mentoring working on his or her resume tape for a future job in broadcast meteorology.
