Injured

How many of you hit a certain age and all of a sudden you start to fall apart???   During my swim last week I hurt my shoulder.   Fortunately it was just a little tweak and was fine 2 days later.   I ran 3 miles on Saturday.   My knee started swelling on Sunday and seems to get gradually worse each day.   This is nothing new.   Last year about this time I had the same problem with my left knee.    I had the fluid drawn off it and a cortizone shot and it was fine for months.    I hate to keep getting cortizone shots but who has time for anything more invasive??  Uggh.  On my list this morning is to call the orthopedist again.

Once again my swimming plans are shot this week.   My husband had to work Monday and Wednesday which are my swimming days so I hope to get back to it next week.

I want to give a shout out to my buddies who are running the Tobacco Road Marathon this weekend.   I wish I was far enough along in my training to do the half.   Kelcey Carlson is the emcee and I know they're hoping for some enthusiastic spectators.   Check it out:  www.tobaccoroadmarathon.com

I am truly enjoying reading Time Trials. I greatly admire any mothers who are trying to make time for themselves because when you feel better and accomplish personal goals, you're a better mom, and you set a wonderful example for your children. I work for the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau in Roanoke Rapids, NC (just 90 minutes away), and we will have our 3rd annual Tri Roanoke Valley Sprint Triathalon on Saturday, April 17. The Sprint Tri would be a wonderful test of your training (300-yard indoor pool swim, 14.8-mile bike, and 5K run). We would love for you to be our guest for the event. If you are interested, just let me know! You can find out more information at www.triroanokevalley.com. Best of luck as you continue your training!

It stinks when an injury or illness throws your training plans off. While you're resting your knee, here's a book that you might like: The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women: How to Get Off Your Bu*t and Get On with Your Training by Dawn Dais. Although I NEVER plan to run a marathon, it was extremely funny and insightful. It will make you laugh, and be glad you're going for a tri. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

You certainly are not in the age group I am, but I have been in yours..Trust me, all bodies are different and react different..Take it easy, from now to eternity

start drinking Cherry Juice everyday, my Dr told me this for joint pain and it sure works!!! Drink 2 to 3 oZ everyday, can get at Food Lion in the juice section. Good Luck!

Inflammation-fueling “hot” foods Hot foods — avoid! Fried foods, Red meat from corn-fed animals raised with antibiotics and/or hormones Partially hydrogenated (trans) fats (found in margarine, chips, processed baked goods) Saturated fats (e.g., animal fats such as butter and lard) Corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil or soy-based oils Soft drinks, including both diet and regular soda and fruit juices All forms of sugar, including natural and refined White flour and other processed grains Most fast-food and prepackaged meals

anti-inflammatory “cooling” foods: Dark green vegetables (including spinach, kale, and seaweed) Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as vitamin C and E supplements Raw nuts and seeds (including almonds, pecans, and walnuts) Omega-3-rich fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and anchovies (or supplements containing EPA/DHA) Cold-pressed oils such as virgin olive, macadamia nut, grapeseed, and avocado Soups made from scratch with free-range poultr

Curious have you tried cutting out all corn syrup and any products with Aspartame ? Also be careful cortizone becomes less effective each time you use it.

I have knee issues too, so I "feel your pain" so to speak. I'm 47 and run 6-7 miles almost daily on two knees with 3 ops between them. The docs keep yelling at me, but I just take it as the price to pay.

My husband and I are in our mid-40's and we feel like we're about 70 - it's all we can do to get home from work and fall in the bed - I think we're depressed, though, because of our financial stress. I hear that can do it to ya. Good thing you don't have that to worry about, Liz..........

I always heard that when you start having aches and pains like your parents then you are getting older. Notice I didn't say OLD.I have been falling apart since I turned 30.

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's not easy being a full-time working professional, Mom of 2, triathalon competitor, plus writing a blog about it. That's a lot of pressure, and like you say, we are not getting any younger! Good luck, but take time out for a little "me" time too. Rest and relaxation is also good for your health and well being!
