Has fall arrived or has Mother Nature forgotten to look at her calendar? Our 7-day forecast includes two days with highs only in the 60s. When was the last time that happened here in Raleigh? The answer is August 31, 2002. The high that day was 68 degrees. That is the only day on record at RDU where a high temperature in August was in the upper 60s. Why is it happening? The weather term is called Warm Season Cold Air Damming. We have a cool, northeast flow at the surface, in addition to winds in the mid-levels of the atmosphere coming out of the southwest. When this warm air flows up and over that cool air at the surface rain develops. The mountains prevent the cool air from moving out of North Carolina. Bottomline, the cold air is stuck in place for at least two days. The situation setting up this week could have us in our jackets and rain gear until late Tuesday.
