When was the last time we had a hurricane named Bertha?

MIKE MOSS SAYS:       Jane,    We had a Hurricane Bertha that made landfall in southeastern North Carolina in July 1996. In addition, the name was used for a 1984 tropical storm, a 1990 hurricane, a 2002 tropical storm and the recent 2008 hurricane. Unless an Atlantic storm name is retired due to an especially great degree of damage or loss of life, it is reused every sixth year.

I could have answered that after living through it. We lived on the coast and had just replaced appliances and repaired out house from Bertha when Fran came barreling through the NC coast.

I remember Bertha hitting Swansboro area in 1996 and causing all kinds of damage. And then 6 weeks later, here comes Fran to the same area. Bad year for the Crystal Coast.

I remember "Bertha" from 1996. Certainly there's enough names that start with "B" that they don't have to keep using the same names every few years....
