Is the rain gauge reporting from Roxboro broken or severely uncalibrated? Are these rain gauges automated, or does someone manually check them and report the numbers? Roxboro's totals always seem to be grossly far behind rainfall totals for the area.

MIKE MOSS SAYS:      Michael,     The station at Roxboro is a sensor suite called an AWOS (automated weather observing system). AWOS records hourly weather conditions, usually at airports. According to the State Climate Office, AWOS sensors in our state are installed and maintained by the NC Department of Transportation Aviation Division following FAA guidelines. It does appear from recent observations that the rain gauge may be blocked or have some other technical issue. Hopefully, DOT will have an opportunity to perform some maintenance that will restore the precipitation gauge there to normal operation soon.
