Which year is in the record books for the most snowfall in North Carolina? We are wondering if it is 1966 or 2000? Or are we both wrong? Thank you so much for the information.

MIKE MOSS SAYS:    Kathy,      For the Raleigh-Durham area, the winter season of 1892-93 is listed as the snowiest, with a total of 31.6 inches. In more recent years, based on observations at the Raleigh-Durham airport, winter 1999-2000 brought the most snow, with 25.8 inches. Of course, snowfall is often banded and localized, so that some nearby areas will have "record" years that can be quite different.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a good resource for something like an integrated "statewide average" snowfall for North Carolina that would attempt to generalize and rank snow amounts by year for the state as a whole.
