My parents say they remember a deep snowfall in Johnston County in 1927. Your "almanac" link only gives historical data back to 1948. Any information on a snowstorm that year?

MIKE MOSS SAYS:       Chris,     That's far enough back that it can be difficult to find info in readily available climate records such as those that are retrievable online from the National Climatic Data Center or the Southeast Regional Climate Center. Most stations have records stretching back to the 1930s and 1940s. I did, however, find a pair of stations in Durham and Goldsboro with snowfall records posted that far back, and judging from the two of those, your parents' memories are right on target. In March of 1927, the Durham station reported a total of 19 inches of snow (13 of which fell on the 2nd) and the Goldsboro site reported 26 inches, all of which apparently fell on March 2nd. I would imagine the storm on March 2nd is the event your parents recall. It might be fun to stop in to one of the Johnston County Libraries sometime and see if they have microfiche copies of the "The Herald" newspaper going back that far - I would imagine that kind of snow would have been big news!
