I am located in Payne Springs Tx. 75156. On my way home last night 12-20-07 I watched an extreemly large object appear like a falling star and shoot across the southeastern sky. It was about 6:10 p.m. About mid way across it burst into flames. I have watched many falling stars and meteor showers it was way way bigger than that. I thought it was an airplane on fire. But it burned out before it made it to close. Problem, I have heard nothing and can not find any information out about it.

MIKE MOSS SAYS:     Tonya Ann,   I haven't heard anything about a satellite or other space debris re-entry that evening, but that is one possibility. Another is that you caught a very nice "fireball" meteor. There is a web site that tracks sightings of fireballs. As of today (22 Dec 07) no report for that evening has been posted, but you may want to take a look at the log over the next few days to see if anyone adds some info that might relate to your observation.
