About 15 minutes ago (5:50 pm 1/23/2007) I saw a bright light streaking northward through the sky. The light had a greenish and orangish colored tail following behind it. Judging from my location (eastern Durham) and the direction of the light I would say that it landed somewhere north of the city. Did I most likely see a meteor? If not what else could the object have possibly been?

MIKE MOSS SAYS:     Matt,     You likely did see a bright meteor, probably in the "fireball" category, as several others made similar reports to us (I'll paste some of them in below rather than start new topics). If you'd like to see some reports from the event that were filed with the American Meteor Society, you can take a look at their "Fireball Log 2007" or submit a report of your own using their "Fireball Reporting Form." Both are available, along with a nice FAQ on the subject, at

You may have mentioned it and I missed, but did anyone report seeing a large meteor falling in the Northeast/Eastern sky about 5:45 on Tues Jan 23, 2007? The sky was still blue and it was white streaming/rolling down. It was really big, I even wondered if it was a plane falling. Thanks,       Sharon House

In Raleigh, looking north at 5:50 pm on Jan. 23rd, I saw an object falling from the sky and possible burn up (large green flash). Did anyone else notice this?      Mary Frazier
