Man the wind is blowing out there. Is there a Wind Advisory out for Wake county? John

MIKE MOSS SAYS:   John,   Your message came in around 8 pm on Tuesday 9 January. Unfortunately, we can't make Ask the Meteorologists a real-time question and answer forum, but I will take the opportunity to let you know about what kinds of winds were being observed then, and how they compare to the criteria for wind advisories issued by the Raleigh National Weather Service Forecast Office.

Observations around the area at the time included NW winds at 10 kt gusting to 23 kt (around 25 mph) at RDU. Gusts as high as 21 and 26 kt were observed at Sanford and Chapel Hill, with most other observations a bit lower than that.

The criteria for issuing a Wind Advisory is that sustained winds (2-minute average) will range in the 31-39 mph span, as opposed to the 10-15 mph we had last evening, or that wind gusts of any duration reach 46-57 mph, far stronger than the 25-30 mph gusts we were experiencing late Tuesday.
